Information about having a research MRI scan

Magnetic resonance, different modalities and applications

  • What is NMR (nuclear magnetic resonance) - the basic physics principles behind MRI (magnetic resonance imaging)
  • How we can use Functional MRI to study brain function
  • Before using NMR for imaging, chemists has used the MR Spectroscopy to study chemical composition of samples - and we apply the same methods to study brain (and muscle) chemistry - concentration of metabolites
  • We can also look at the diffusion - and ultimately at the brain (white matter) connectivity, the "wiring" of the brain - using Diffusion Tensor Imaging (DTI)
  • An example of applying "standard" MRI techniques is the study of function of a heart

To study NMR/MRI further, we encourage to consider opportunities for students.
